ANightInAustin | Austin Attractions | Austin Events | Things Austin TX The blues musician Lillian Standfield thought that Austin needed a slogan to promote music after returning home from a gig in Houston and seeing the city limits sign in 1991.

She originally suggested "Music Capital of Texas" to the Austin Music Commission. When the city researched the idea they found that Austin has more live music venues per capita than cities like Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City.

Nancy Coplin (Chairperson of the Austin Music Commission) told her to come to the Music Commission meeting the next night and make that suggestion. She did. They directed their staff, Bob Meyer (who recently passed away) to research it and Austin was at least the capital per capita, but because our music business infrastructure was not as big as it is currently, they decided to go with "Live Music Capital". Max Nofsieger, Mayor Protem at the time wanted it "Live Music Capital of the Universe", but they settled for "Live Music Capital of the World".

And that is how it actually happened and "Live Music Capital of the World" won out to become Austin Tx official slogan and was adopted by the city council on August 29, 1991.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to Lillian for getting the whole thing started". ~ Nancy Coplin (Music Coordinator, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport)
